Homeowners on Working With A-1

Insurance paperwork is nobody’s favorite project. South Florida homeowners share how A-1 made inspections, reports and roof work straightforward and explained every step.

What a wind mitigation inspection does for you

A wind mitigation inspection documents the features of your home that help it resist hurricane-force wind. The results are recorded on the state’s Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form, OIR-B1-1802, which Florida insurers use when rating your windstorm coverage.

Florida law requires insurers to offer premium discounts or credits for qualifying wind-resistant construction. How much you save depends on your home, your insurer and your policy, so we never promise a dollar amount. What we can say is that many homeowners are paying for protection their house already has because no one has documented it.

The form must be signed by a qualified inspector. The list on the form includes licensed general, building and residential contractors, and A-1 holds a certified building contractor license (CBC1263521) in addition to our roofing license (CCC1333587). Insurers generally accept a completed form for up to five years as long as nothing material about the home changes, but check with your carrier, since requirements can vary.

What you receive

The 7 categories on the wind mitigation form

The OIR-B1-1802 form looks at seven parts of your home. Here is what each one means in plain terms.

Several of these items are set when the roof is built or replaced. That is why a roof replacement is often the best time to improve your wind mitigation results, for example by upgrading deck attachment or adding secondary water resistance where the code and your roof system allow.

Wind mitigation, 4-point inspection and roof certification

Florida insurers ask for different reports depending on the age of the home and the policy. Here is how they differ and where A-1 can help.

Wind mitigation inspection

Documents wind-resistant features on form OIR-B1-1802 for possible premium credits. We complete and sign this form as a licensed building contractor.

Roof certification

A letter from a licensed roofing contractor stating the roof’s condition and estimated remaining life, which some insurers request for older roofs.

Wind mitigation questions

How much can a wind mitigation inspection save me?

It varies widely by home, insurer and policy. Some homeowners see a meaningful reduction in the wind portion of their premium, others see little change. Your insurance agent can tell you how your specific results will be applied.

Who can sign the OIR-B1-1802 form?

The form lists qualified inspectors, including licensed general, building and residential contractors, building code inspectors, engineers, architects and qualified home inspectors. A-1 signs as a certified building contractor (CBC1263521).

How long is a wind mitigation report good for?

Insurers generally accept the form for up to five years if there are no material changes to the home. Replacing your roof or adding impact windows is a good reason to get a new one.

Do you do full 4-point inspections?

We handle the roof portion and provide roof certification letters. Electrical, plumbing and HVAC portions may need to be completed by other qualified inspectors. Ask us and we will help you sort out what your insurer needs.

Can a new roof improve my wind mitigation results?

Often, yes. Roof deck attachment and secondary water resistance are typically addressed during a replacement, and a newer permitted roof covering can also help. We can walk you through the options before you replace.
