What Homeowners Say After A-1 Fixed Their Storm Damaged Roof

After a storm, homeowners want a roofer who shows up, explains what happened and fixes it properly. Read what our customers say about the inspection, the paperwork and the finished repair.

Storm damage roof repair that starts with a real inspection

Storm damage roof repair in South Florida is rarely as simple as replacing what you can see from the driveway. A summer squall or a line of thunderstorms can crack concrete tile, crease shingles and bend flashing without leaving an obvious hole. Weeks later, the first sign is a ceiling stain.

A-1 is a family-run roofing company in Pompano Beach, founded in 2012. After a storm we walk the roof, check the attic for water, and photograph every problem area so you know exactly what was damaged and what was not.

If the roof was already near the end of its life, we tell you. If the storm damage is limited to one slope, we repair that slope and add extra layers of protection around vents, pipes and returns, where water most often finds its way back in.

What roof storm damage looks like on each roof type

Every roof system fails differently in high wind and heavy rain. Here is what we look for on the four roof types most common in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade.

Tile roofs

Cracked or broken tiles, tiles lifted off their foam or mortar set, loose hip and ridge tiles, and torn underlayment beneath. Damaged tile can hide a failed underlayment that is already letting water in.

Shingle roofs

Shingles that were lifted and creased by wind lose their seal even if they lie back down. We also check for missing tabs, exposed nails, blown-off ridge caps and granule loss from hail.

Metal roofs

Loose or backed-out fasteners, lifted panel edges, dents from debris or hail, and damaged trim and flashing at eaves, rakes and ridges.

Flat roofs

Torn or punctured membrane, split seams, peeled flashing at walls and curbs, clogged drains and ponding water after heavy rain.

Photo documentation for your insurance claim

Sudden damage from wind, hail or a falling limb is often covered by homeowners insurance, while age and normal wear usually are not. What helps most is clear documentation. We photograph the damage from the roof and the attic, note the location and type of each problem, and write up the repair in plain language.

If you would like, we can be on site when your insurance adjuster inspects the roof so the damage is easy to find and discuss. We are roofers, not public adjusters: we do not negotiate your claim and cannot promise what your insurer will pay. Coverage, deductibles and filing deadlines depend on your own policy, so review it and report damage to your insurer promptly.

For wind damage roof repair that turns out to be larger than one area, we will walk you through your options for a roof repair or a full replacement.

Repair or replace after storm damage?

Many storm damaged roofs can be repaired. If the damage is confined to one section and the rest of the roof is sound, a targeted repair is usually the smart choice. A roof over 15 years old with damage on several slopes, soft decking or failing underlayment is a different story, and a roof replacement may cost less over time.

Florida also has what is often called the 25% roof rule. Under the Florida Building Code, when more than 25% of a roof section is repaired or replaced within 12 months, that section generally has to be brought up to current code. Since 2022, a roof that was built, repaired or replaced under the 2007 Florida Building Code or later may be repaired to the code in effect when it was installed, even if more than 25% is damaged. Rules and local interpretations change, so we confirm the current requirements with the building department for your property before we quote.

When to call a roofer after a storm

Call right away if water is coming through a ceiling or light fixture, if a tree or large limb is on the roof, or if you can see missing sections of roofing from the ground. Those situations call for emergency roof repair.

Book a roof inspection within a few days if you notice tile or shingle pieces in the yard, granules in the gutters, a new stain on the ceiling, or if a strong storm passed directly over your neighborhood. Wind and hail damage often shows up as a leak weeks later.

Storm damage roof repair questions

How do I know if my roof has storm damage?

Look for tile or shingle pieces in the yard, granules in gutters, bent flashing and new ceiling stains. Many problems are not visible from the ground, so a free roof inspection is the safest way to know.

Does homeowners insurance cover storm damage roof repair?

Sudden damage from wind, hail or falling trees is often covered, subject to your deductible and policy terms, while wear and age usually are not. Review your policy and report damage promptly. We provide photos and a written report to support your claim.

Can you fix hail damage on a roof?

Yes. Hail damage roof repair can mean replacing bruised shingles, cracked tile or dented metal panels and flashing. We document hail damage with close-up photos.

Can you tarp my roof before the permanent repair?

Yes. If water is getting in, we install temporary protection first, then schedule the permanent repair as soon as materials and weather allow.

Is your storm damage repair work warrantied?

Yes. Residential roof repairs include a written workmanship warranty of 1 to 3 years, depending on the repair.
